Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas that can cause accidental poisoning or even death if not quickly detected. A working Carbon Monoxide Alarm will sound when the gas reaches an elevated level, alerting you and your family to the danger. First Alert offers a wide range of Carbon Monoxide Alarms to protect what matters most. |

How to Choose a Carbon Monoxide Alarm:
Having a working Carbon Monoxide Alarm installed in your home isn't just an important safety precaution - in some areas, it's the law. There are many options to consider when selecting a CO Alarm. Becoming informed is the best way to ensure you make the right choice to keep your family safe.
Electrochemical Sensor - This sensor is highly sensitive and most accurate at reading CO levels. Electrochemical sensors create a chemical reaction with the CO gas, creating an electrical current that sounds the alarm. All First Alert Carbon Monoxide Alarms are equipped with this type of sensor.
Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm - First Alert offers two-in-one protection with a selecting of detectors that alert you to carbon monoxide and smoke. These alarms are equipped with both an electrochemical sensor for accurate detection of CO, and either a photoelectric or ionization sensor for detection of smoke and fire.

Once an alarm type has been selected, the next consideration is whether the Carbon Monoxide Detector will be hardwired, plug-in, battery powered, or hardwired with a battery backup.
Battery Powered Carbon Monoxide Alarm - First Alert has a wide selection of battery operated Carbon Monoxide Alarms. Powered by AA, 9V or long life lithium batteries, these Carbon Monoxide and Combination Alarms are easy to install or replace. Battery powered CO detectors must be tested monthly, and batteries should be replaced every six months.

Where to Install Your Carbon Monoxide Alarm:
It is a common misunderstanding that Carbon Monoxide Alarms must be placed near the ground to accurately detect levels of CO. In truth, Carbon Monoxide is roughly the same weight as air, and distributes evenly throughout a room. This means a CO detector can be placed at any height on a wall or ceiling.
It is important to keep in mind that the CO Alarm must be placed in an area that allows for the siren to be heard. First Alert recommends placing a Carbon Monoxide Detector in all sleeping areas, as well as living areas and the basement. As Carbon Monoxide moves freely through the air, the Alarm must not be located near a ceiling fan, or blocked by furniture in order to detect CO levels accurately.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms should be installed in each sleeping area, living area, and basement. Always follow the included instructions when installing your Carbon Monoxide Alarm.
